Pastor’s Weekly Email – August 16

Are you wise?  Do you know someone who is wise?  What makes us wise?  Common sense?  Education? Judgment?

Well, this coming Sunday, August 16, we’re going to meet “wisdom” and she’s a she!  Our first reading is Proverbs 9:1-6, and it’s all about wisdom.  We’ll hear that our ideas about wisdom are not necessarily God’s.  You are invited to come to worship and receive spiritual wisdom.  You’re also invited to come to Christ’s wisdom feast – Holy Communion.  Come and eat the Bread of Life and drink the Cup of Salvation.  We’ll be looking for you!

Announcing the Third Annual Blessing of the Backpacks!  Most students start back to school on August 31.  We’re going to help get students and parents ready for a year of growth where God will be with us every step of the way.  Pre-schoolers, kindergarteners, elementary-, middle-, and high-schoolers are all urged to bring their backpacks for a special blessing.

Summer is fast drawing to a close.  Schools are about to open and fall activities at work and community are kicking in.  ELC of Durham will also shift into its fall schedule of ministry.  Our shift date is:

Sunday, September 13 – RALLY DAY

On this Sunday, our Spark Sunday School and Youth Program will return at 9:00 AM.  Children and youth ages 3-18 are all urged to be present for a really fun Rally Day.  Our worship time will be one hour later, at 10:30 AM.  After worship will be our Church Picnic, so please dress casually.  Church Council members will provide hot dogs, burgers, buns, condiments, and drinks.  You’re asked to bring a side dish to share.  But most of all, we want you to bring YOU!
