A
Cancun Mission
We (Mary and Rachel Crouse)
will be traveling to Cancun, Mexico from January 2nd to
January 9th for another mission experience with Discovery
Service Projects. In Mexico, Hurricane Wilma left seven people dead,
300,000 people displaced, and damaged 700,000 homes. The hurricane has
also had a devastating effect on the Mexican economy, with an estimated
40% of the people living below the poverty line. The World Bank
estimates that 53% of Mexicans earn less than $2 day, while 23% earn
less than $1 a day. Three quarters of the people in Mexico now live in
urban areas. Recovery for these people still continues today.
We will be traveling beyond roads or electricity to the middle
of a low income development. We will be helping with construction of 18
concrete block houses, 4 meters x 4 meters, with a small bath addition.
They will have concrete floors and roofs. The local pastors are
choosing families to receive these homes. Discovery Services will also
provide sewing classes for the local women as well as crafts, games and
Bible stories for the neighborhood children.
In Honduras we learned the art of ‘rebarring.’ Perhaps in
Mexico we will get to further improve our skill! We are looking forward
to serving the disaster victims in Mexico. It is always a gratifying
experience when we travel with Discovery Service; and the people we
serve are always so grateful.
Please pray for this project which will run for eight weeks.
We will be participating in week two. Your prayers for this project and
for the safe traveling of all the participants would be greatly
appreciated!
